Our
Rhodesian
Ridgebacks.

Our first Rhodesian Ridgeback joined the family in 1990 -
Starlight Express Of Saragwe - or RUDI as he was more commonly known. RUDI was a dog of superb temperament
and was a great loss when he died in 1996.
He was not the most co-operative show dog however he was
reasonably
successful and gained his stud book number.
Ridgebacks are addictive and may damage your wallet
Next came Mwenga Melody Of Saragwe - HOLLY. She was
successful in the show ring and was a superb mother to her one and only litter.
From this litter came four show dogs Ch Saragwe Saafiki At Faahac, Saragwe Sunny
Dream In Jarhiba, Saragwe Nozipo Mwingereza and Saragwe Savannah.
She is now the grand old lady of the house.
We then got our next addition to the family Mwenga
Mandani Of Saragwe - LENA. She was a sweet girl but
after she had a litter she decided she would be top bitch and not Holly - so
in the interest of both dogs she was re homed.
From her litter we ran a bitch on but she damaged her
teeth so would not have been any good in the show ring so we found her a nice
home. One the dogs from this litter Saragwe Hodari Jambaro is being shown
successfully
From the litter that HOLLY had we kept Saragwe Savannah -
SAM. He has had a reasonable amount of success in the show ring but has been
lightly shown due to our other commitments.
The latest member of our ridgeback family is Kwekwe
Kassala Of Saragwe. She is a delightful girl but has only been lightly shown due
to our other commitments.
When it comes to breeding we use the following policy.
USE OF STUD DOG
The owner of the dam must be breeding to retain a puppy.
The hip score of the dam must be balanced.
The hip score of the dam and sire when added together and
divided by 2 must be equal to or below the breed mean average.
We must believe that the pedigrees do not conflict.
BREEDING FROM A BITCH
We must be wanting to retain a puppy.
The hip score of the sire must be balanced.
The hip score of the dam and sire when added together and
divided by 2 must be equal to or below the breed mean average.
We must believe that the pedigrees do not conflict.
SALE OF PUPPIES
All prospective buyers are vetted (whether they know it
or not).
Before any commitment is made prospective buyers are
shown a video about dermoid sinus and talked to about hip dysplasia. They are
also introduced to our dogs.
If we think they are not suitable then they are told at
that time.
If they still want to continue their name is added to the
appropriate list. (Potential Show Quality or Pet Quality, Dog or Bitch).
It is explained that we have pick of litter and they have
pick number so and so of which ever quality and there is no queue jumping.
It is also explained that there is no guarantee that there will be a puppy
available and that the following will happen.
When the litter arrives people will telephoned in order.
If they are still interested they are invited to see the litter between 14 days
and 21 days. In the intervening time the litter will have been sinus checked
twice. They will be informed that they cannot choose at this stage.
If having come so far they are still interested then a
this stage a 50% deposit is required.
The puppies are sinus checked again at around six weeks
and people are contacted and arrangements made for them to come back at around
seven weeks in order to choose their puppy. Having chosen the puppy the balance
is due and the name is chosen for the dog/bitch for registration with the Kennel
Club. (We retain a veto on unsuitable names). Arrangements are then made for
them to collect the puppy at around eight weeks of age.
All buyers have to sign a purchase agreement and
undertaking about the future welfare of the puppy and in case of problems to
contact us. They are also invited to apply to join the ridgeback club
appropriate to their geographical location.
All puppies leave with a pedigree, insurance, diet sheet
and food. They do not normally leave with the Kennel Club registration
certificate which is forwarded as soon as it is received.
