We first became actively involved in Rhodesian Ridgebacks
in 1990. They are a unique breed and evolved in the later part of the 19th Century
to fulfill the needs of the hunters in Southern Africa.
These needs were varied as they not only needed to be
able to hunt but also had to be capable of guarding livestock, the camp site and
the home.
This meant that not only did they have a great deal of
guile in order to survive whilst hunting but also had a superb temperament and
could be trusted to protect
both livestock and the family. Their superb temperament let them
differentiate between the family and friends but still allowed them to ward off strangers
and other dangers.
If you are considering obtaining a Rhodesian Ridgeback
for the first time then you should talk to some one who already has
one. This is probably best done by contacting one of the breed clubs.
